la selva

On Monday, after spending some time in Quito, drinking smoothies and visiting the markets, we took an 8 hour bus into the jungle.
As we traveled, the Trans-Ecuadorian oil pipeline followed us, traversing the entire country.
We arrived in Loja to a torrential downpour a little after midnight and took shelter in a hostal called Sayonara.  In the morning we were escorted deep into the Cuyabeno Reserve to the Guacamayo Lodge by Joaquin, a local who grew up in the Amazon.
After getting familiar with our new home, Joaquin took us on a jungle cruise and we saw birds, including an owl, a henna tree, and took a dip in the water (don't let the pirana's get you!).
