sister spit

On Wednesday I went to a Sister Spit reading at the Hugo House.  Sister Spit is a touring lesbian-queer-feminist spoken word and performance art collective based in San Francisco.  It was started by writer/host Michelle Tea in 1994.  Dorothy Allison, winner of the National Book Award in 1992 for her first novel, Bastard Out of Carolina, (also featured in the same Le Tigre song as Eileen Myles) read a powerful passage from her novel.  Other highlights were comic artist and writer Cassie Sneider, slam poet Kit Yan, and Seattle writer Rebecca Brown.  The performances were hilarious, fearless, and consciousness raising.  Click here for an interview with Eileen Myles on the origins of Sister Spit.

  1. Bastard Out of Carolina (correction); loved that book the violence of the South at an individual level.
