On Thursday I saw the documentary From the Back of the Room, by Amy Oden, on women in the DIY punk scene. It goes over the history of women in punk, tracing the emergence of 80s punk and the riot grrl scene of the 90s, and confronts issues of race, gender, sexuality, and class within a patriarchal community. It gave voice to feminist issues in the femme punk scene and its strong, positive message transcended the bounds of alternative culture and invoked a larger discussion on how these issues affect women today.
