On Tuesday, jesse met me at the hospital so that we could dine at salumi, mario batali's father's traditional italian deli, featuring artisan cured meats and cheeses. We got the muffaletta sandwich and the charcuterie plate. The experience both took me back to the pueblos in the alpujarras and made me feel like a character in big night.
Afterwards, we went to the frye art museum and saw work by susie j. lee. Her installation, rain shower, and her moving portrait of the aged gave us the powerful sense that time had stopped, allowing us to live inside an emotional memory for a few moments.
That evening we saw plymptoons, a documentary on the animator Bill Plympton, and found out that dad has been a fan of his work. His commitment to independent animation was formative for the world of cartooning and his dark, gritty, and twisted animations challenge conformity in an endearing and imaginative way. We were able to meet the long island director, alexia anastasio, who's next film is going to be on redheads.
On Wednesday we woke up to wood fired bagels at eltana and headed up the hill to get jesse's hair cut. We then warmed up with some loose leaf biscotti tea at remedy teas. Later in the evening we met up with my friend, annie, and continued our culinary catharsis at plum bistro for thoughtfully executed vegetarian food. I had the portabello "steak" and mashed purple potatoes. For more photos click: here
